Choosing an MCS Certified Installer...

Evolve Solar Energy - March 2024

If you are considering investing in solar PV then selecting the right installer should be at the top of your list. It is important to appoint a reputable and reliable company and that’s where the MCS, or Microgeneration Certification Scheme comes in.

MCS is an internationally recognized certification scheme for renewable energy products and installers. Choosing an MCS certified installer for your solar panel installation offers many benefits, read on to find out more.

Quality Assurance and Standards

MCS is a mark of quality and having solar panels installed to your home of business is a great investment, however, finding the right installer is an important consideration that should not be overlooked. All MCS certified installers must complete rigorous training in installation, quality assurance and adherence to the latest industry standards. This means you can have complete peace of mind knowing that your installation will be carried out by a professional company who have the necessary knowledge and experience.

Government Grants and Incentives

A great advantage of working with an MCS certified installer is the eligibility to receive government incentives and grants. The UK government and indeed governments throughout the world are dedicated to promoting the use of renewable energy, through cost saving incentives to help encourage homeowners and businesses to install solar panels and other renewable technologies.

The current incentive in the UK is the Smart Export Guarantee. The Smart Export Guarantee or SEG allows homeowners and businesses to claim money back through an electricity provider by generating renewable energy and selling any excess back to the grid. By choosing an MCS certified installer, you can take full advantage of this incentive and maximize the full financial return on your solar panel investment. Unfortunately, should you choose to use an installer who does not have the necessary MCS certification you may not be able to access the Smart Export Guarantee.

Reliable and Reputable Suppliers

MCS certified installers will have access to a huge network of reputable and trusted wholesalers and suppliers. For complete peace of mind, MCS certified installers will have established relationships with their suppliers of solar panels and related equipment ensuring that the equipment and components used in your installation are of the highest quality, have been sourced from trusted manufacturers of products that meet good standards of quality, performance and safety.

Consumer Code

It is mandatory for all MCS certified Installers to be registered with a Trading Standards Institute (TSI) Consumer Code. These Codes are there to ensure consumer protection and your installer’s membership of a Consumer Code, means that they must go above and beyond minimum consumer law obligations. Your Installer’s Consumer Code can assist with pre-sale and contractual issues and it provides an extra level of protection for you if something goes wrong with your installation. Evolve Solar Energy are registered with RECC, a champion of high standards of consumer protection. Find out more, https://www.recc.org.uk.

Expert Installation

The installation of solar panels can be a complex process that requires expert knowledge. An MCS certified installer must undertake extensive industry training and have complete understanding of the latest solar panel technologies and safety standards. Their expertise and experience will allow them to assess your specific requirements and determine the most suitable solar PV system to ensure the best yields and return on your investment.

Aftersales and Warranty

Solar panel installations will usually come with warranties that cover both the equipment and the installation work. Choosing an MCS certified installer will guarantee that your installation is covered by a comprehensive warranty, providing you with protection against product faults or issues with the installation work. Evolve Solar Energy are committed to providing excellent customer support. Should a problem arise with your solar PV system, as an MCS certified installer, we will be equipped to address the issue quickly and effectively allowing you to take advantage of the benefits of your solar PV system for many years to come.

Finding an MCS certified Installer

You can find an MCS certified installer by using the ‘Find A Contractor’ search on the MCS website https://mcscertified.com. You can search for an installer by, the type of technology you are thinking of installing, your location, the installers name or their MCS certification number, ours is NIC-600386. Alternatively, you can call their Helpdesk Team on 0333 103 8130 or email hello@mcscertified.com.

A few key points to consider when appointing an MCS certified installer for your solar PV installation:

• Check that an installer is actually MCS registered before entering into any contract.
• Consider the installer previous experience and expertise in solar panel installation. How long have they have been in business and have completed similar projects to yours in the past?
• Build a good relationship. Consider first impressions, does the installer seem friendly and knowledgeable, are they listening to you and taking note of requirements?
• Find out what warranties and aftersales support they will provide. An MCS certified installer should be open and transparent about their terms and conditions and will be dedicated to customer support.
• Most installers will be happy for you to see previous work for yourself or can provide references from previous customers.
• Seek recommendations from friends and family who have had a solar PV installation. Would they be happy to recommend the installer that they used?
• Compare quotes from other MCS certified companies. It is important to ensure that the installer’s pricing is fair and competitive, but if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
